In 1983 New Jersey adopted the Uniform Fire Safety Act. The purpose of the act is to ensure that all areas of the state are protected by a uniform fire safety code which will protect the lives and property of the State's citizens.  Municipalities in New Jersey had the option of adopting the code or having state inspectors perform fire code inspections in their municipality.  To better serve the citizens and businesses of Berlin, the Mayor and Council adopted the code and kept enforcement at a local level.

In January of 1996 Berlin Borough and Waterford Township entered into a Inter-Local Services Agreement.  That agreement made the Berlin Borough Bureau of Fire Prevention the Uniform Fire Code enforcing agency for Waterford Township.  Agreements of this type are designed to cut down the duplication of equipment to perform the same function in two jurisdictions and are increasing daily in all aspects of municipal services.

The main function of the Bureau of Fire Prevention is, just that, FIRE PREVENTION.  Through thorough fire inspections of every business in Berlin and public education, we can help lessen the threat of fire and injury from fire.
